Leprosy

Leprosy is an infectious disease that caused by the bacillus mycobacterium which damages people’s flesh, complications can cause loss of sensation in the hands and feet, facial deformities and loss of sight which later leads to the total disability.
Pale patches on the skin are usually first sign of the disease, they are painless and do not itch so are often ignored by the patient.
In 2006 there were cases of 260,000 reported world wide, and approximated India with a 54%, Brazil 17%, Indonesia 7%, and about 1% ov all new cases in the world occur in Tanzania.
Estimates by the healthy ministry show that there are 2600 new infectious each year in Tanzania but that is a major cut in the 36,000 new cases annually recorded in the early 1980’s.
2009 statistics showed that 11% of new patients who had been discovered to have leprosy had permanent disabilities.

However in Dodoma where the project for Liwile will take place used to have 150 patients a day and now they register 10 to 20 per month which is to say approximately 240 cases annually which is 9.2% out of 26 regions and thats dangerous.

However people still think/believe that witchcraft or divine curse is behind the leprosy and its not a normal disease so they dodge hospitals and attend to witch doctors whom are however fail to cure them and give them a false information that the disease is uncured, so there is lack of awareness among the patients and the community surrounding them and thats what cause the long existance of the disease.
